It can be hard balancing #momlife while still looking and feeling good. Introducing every mom’s new best friend: a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is a set of clothing you can mix and match throughout the season. The best part? Since they can be mixed and matched, you no longer have to spend time thinking about what looks good. You’ll save money and you may find yourself donating your old clothes because you now have your very basics you’ll wear all the time. Plus, your items will be good for on-the-go errands, playdates, nights out with your partner, work, and everything in between!
When it comes to building a capsule wardrobe, there are a few things to remember. First, it’s important to remember that quality matters. Even if you have to splurge a little to get a higher quality item, you’ll be glad you did because it will last longer. Second, avoid bright, loud colors that you will get tired of quickly. Keeping your color palette neutral will make it easier to mix and match.
If you want to build your capsule, select one piece (or get inspired by our selections) in each section. This means you’ll only select one piece of outerwear, one t-shirt, one sweater, one pair of jeans, etc.

Outerwear
Your outerwear needs may be different depending on what part of the world you live in. If it gets chilly, opt for something a little heavier, like a leather jacket or a wool trench. If the sun’s heat doesn’t let up until December, you’ll want to keep it light with a soft linen.
Comfortable t-shirt
Adding a basic t-shirt turns your look into a blank canvas. You can keep it relaxed or dress it up with the right accessories.
Sweater
For me, fall means it’s time to break out the chunky knit sweater. It’s important to select a sweater that goes with your style, whether you’re looking for something relaxed, polished, or can be worn for work and the weekend.
Denim jeans
A high quality pair of denim jeans will last years if you take care of them. Whether your a fan of skinny, bootcut, straight, or the now widely-loved “mom jean” cut, grab a pair that flatters you the most.
Little black dress
The LBD is a must-have for every season because of it’s versatility. A dress like this is an easy way to dress up without putting in a ton of effort. It’s great for work events, dinners, or nights with the family. Pair it with a boots and you’re all set.
Scarves
You can’t build a fall capsule wardrobe without a scarf. I like to go for patterned scarves as they add an extra element to your whole look, but solid color scarves are a nice way to add a pop of color.
Small earrings
If you’ve got a baby in the house, you know long earrings are the enemy. Small earrings go with every outfit you can think of without fear of baby ripping your ear off. Plus, it’s a nice way to feel polished without much effort.
Shoes for on-the-go
Between grocery shopping, play dates, doctor visits, and trips to the park, you need a shoe that can keep up with your schedule. I’m a big fan of the dressy sneaker look, but you can opt for slip-ons or flats.
Shoes for the times to dress up
When it’s time for a night out with your partner or you’re heading to work, ditch the sneaker and go for something a little more dressy.
A bag to hold it all in
You need to find a bag that’s going to hold everything no matter what age your child is. Finding a nice quality leather bag will last you for years to come and will withstand just about everything you put it through.
