Fur Keeps: An Atlantans Guide to Pet Adoption

Trending Now

We’ve got to be honest. With so many Atlanta animals in need of a good home, buying from a breeder is our pet peeve. If your family is in the market for a furry friend, these adoption agencies can take the guesswork out of finding the perfect pet.

Atlanta Humane Society
With two locations in the city, the Atlanta Human Society has both cats and dogs up for adoption. You can start by browsing for your future pet online, with adoption fees ranging from $50-$200, depending on the age and type of animal. The fee includes spay/neutering, initial vaccinations, micro-chipping and 14 days of follow up vet care.  If you’re adopting a dog over 4 months old and you already have a dog in your home, the Atlanta Humane Society requires a “meet & greet” between the two dogs.

In 2013, LifeLine took over Fulton County’s animal control and DeKalb County’s animal shelter. Working with the shelters and through a network of foster homes, LifeLine is a great choice for families searching for a dog. You can browse animals looking for a forever home and begin the application process online, or visit one of their adoption events at PetSmart or PetCo on weekends (check the website for details).

Paws Atlanta
Located in Decatur, Paws Atlanta adopts out both cats and dogs. Families can apply online or in person. Adoption fees range from $50-$225, which include spay/neutering, basic vaccinations, 30 days of pet health insurance and a bag of pet food the animal. Some adoptions through Paws Atlanta require a home inspection.

Atlanta Pet Rescue and Adoption
This Smyrna agency makes adoption a family affair: the in-person interview, required for all canine adoptions, includes all family members living at home.  Expect to pay $300 to adopt a dog and $150 for a cat, which includes spay/neutering, initial vaccinations and micro-chipping. Atlanta Pet Rescue handles only dogs weighing less than 25 pounds, and requires cats younger than 7 months to be adopted in pairs or brought into a home that already has another cat.
