Situated on vast area of land, and with more than twenty miles of hiking trails, the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge invites families to wander through a breathtaking wilderness comprised of forest, prairies, and wetlands that is chock full of native flora and fauna. The Center’s Manager, Suzanne Tuttle, recently summed up what makes this spot awesome, how it got started, and more. Read on:

Red Tricycle: Congratulations! Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome.” What do you think your customers value most about your business?

Suzanne Tuttle: At 3621 acres in size, our park gives our guests the opportunity to experience a bit of Texas’ wilderness within the city limits of Fort Worth.

RT: How was the Nature Center created?

ST: The City of Fort Worth purchased the land which now comprises the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge in 1914 to protect the watershed of the newly constructed Lake Worth reservoir.  Nearly 100 years later we are still fulfilling that mission.

RT: What is your proudest moment in the business of the Nature Center?

ST: My proudest moments are when young adults that we taught in our classes as children contact us to tell us that their interaction with our staff inspired them to pursue a career in science. Influencing future community leaders to appreciate the natural world is our most important legacy.
