It’s the last few weeks of summer, and you’re looking to make screen time a little more educational. We’ve got you covered with 14 mesmerizing apps that do everything from introducing young readers to the alphabet to giving avid readers a never-ending supply of fresh material. Flip through the slideshow to see them all.

Reading Racer

Using speech recognition, this app encourages kids ages five to eight to bulk up their fluency by reading aloud more than 200 stories and rhymes. As they read, they earn points, race cars around tracks, and unlock new courses—kids can even race other readers in competitive mode! If you're uncomfortable with them going head-to-head for privacy reasons, simply keep the app locked down in practice mode. All in all, it's a great way to encourage extra read-aloud time.

Available at iTunes, free.
