Trending Now

Once your baby turns one, she’s probably standing on her own and growing faster than you ever would’ve imagined on day one. Don’t miss an inch as she growth spurts her way through childhood and get a growth chart started, stat. Put on your DIY hat and you can make a beautiful, personalized and unique ruler growth chart. You’re just a hardware store trip, about $20 and a few crafty hours away from tracking her height.

How to Make a DIY Ruler Growth Chart

To begin, you’ll need a 1″ x 8″ x 6′ pine board. You can leave it natural or you can treat it with stain or paint it a color that’ll coordinate with your baby’s nursery.

Next use a ruler and pencil to plan the markings. You’ll want to think about where you’re going to hang your chart – flush with the floor or higher up – before you decide where to begin the height measurements. Next, you can darken the marking with black acrylic paint and a paint brush or a permanent marker. To make adding numbers easier, find a font you like and print them out for a pattern.

Personalize It!

While the ruler growth chart is basic and classic on its own, you can give it your own twist with a little creativity and personalization. Here are a few ideas to inspire you.

Instead of simply writing down heights and ages each time you track your child, consider adding a photo of your baby at each age. This is a great way to make one growth chart work for the whole family too. Try the tutorial at Where the Smiles Have Been. Just be sure to make marks on the chart as well as attach photos, just in case the photos fall off and get misplaced later.

Add your child’s name using a stencil and paint, or go the extra mile gluing on wooden letters, which you can jazz up with a little modge podge and scrapbook paper following the instructions at The Crafting Chicks.

If you’re really creative and have great handwriting or artistic abilities, take a cue from the blogger at Brooklyn Limestone. You can make your baby’s growth chart an all-out memory board writing down tidbits about her birth (height plus weight and time), when milestones like crawling and walking were reached and more along with tracking how tall she is at every age and stage.

Finish & Hang

To complete the chart you can cover it with a couple of coats of satin polyurethane. Then add a saw-tooth picture hanger or heavy duty mounting tape to attach it to your wall.
