Go Ahead & Keep Drinking Your LaCroix

Trending Now

After a recent lawsuit alleging that flavored seltzer water brand LaCroix isn’t exactly natural (the brand’s parent company National Beverage refuted the allegations), some consumers started to wonder if any of these fruity sparkling bevs are actually okay to consume. Um, and especially in the mass quantities that we totally don’t drink on the daily.

Too much of anything can get you into trouble. But when it comes to flavored seltzer water, is there really such thing as too much? So, maybe you have a bit of a habit. Downing these sweet little seltzer waters is better than tossing back a 12-pack of your tot’s juice boxes or worse, a regular soda loaded with sugar…right?

Nutritional health counselor Sara Siskind recently told Bustle, “Flavored seltzer water can be an excellent alternative to soda and other sugar-loaded drinks.” And yes, juice is a sugar-loaded drink. You might think that the “fruit” in fruit juice somehow means it’s healthy—and it can be, but only in small quantities or if you’re drinking low-sugar 100 percent fruit juice.

So yes, those fruit-flavored sugar-free seltzers are preferable. They reduce the risk of developing potentially serious health issues, such as Type 2 diabetes or heart disease, in comparison to their full-sugar cousins. So before you pass up your fave seltzer, fearing that it’s not quote “so” natural, think again. In comparison to other options, these no-sugar beverages are a healthier pick.
