Matt Kirouac

"I love living in the city, and could probably never not live in a big city, but for a relaxing summer day it feels good to thoroughly unplug and do something in nature. We get the best of both worlds at LaBagh Woods, an enormous forest preserve on the far northwest side of the city in Sauganash. We searched long and hard to find a forest preserve that was actually forestal, and we found it here, with winding hiking trails through the woods and plenty of nooks and crannies in which to have a picnic or watch birds. The north branch of the Chicago River runs through the forest preserve, complete with bridges and a defunct railroad track. Lots of good exploring opportunities to be had! I’d recommend swinging by nearby Mother Cluckers Kitchen for a chicken finger po’boy (yes, this exists) and some sweet potato pie to fuel up, then hit the trails and meander amongst the flowers. Because living in the city, it’s not too often you literally get the chance to stop and smell the roses."
