While some companies, like Netflix and Facebook, have made waves with their generous maternity leave policies, many women are still faced with the challenge of finding ways to afford staying home with their babies when employers don’t pay for leave. Crowdfunding is becoming an increasingly popular way to fill that pay gap.

Moms are starting to get more resourceful when it comes to funding maternity leave and that means turning to crowdfunding platforms like Plumfund and GoFundMe. On GoFundMe alone, there are currently over 3,000 results when users search the keyword maternity. The funding goals range everywhere from $1,500 to over $10,000.

The popularity of crowdfunding maternity leave has grown so much, that a new platform dedicated solely to maternity leave funding, called Take12, has recently launched. On the site, donors are able to give the gift of time, by funding specific mom moments, like snuggling with the baby, or any cash amount of their choosing.

Many parents to-be are also forgoing traditional baby registry items in lieu of money they can use to fund time off. Natalie Gordon, the founder and CEO of Babylist, told The Atlantic that the site has seen users asking for financial support for their maternity leave via the “Enter Your Own” option field. Over 200 leave funds have been created on the site since last May, with the average cash goal set to $2,000.

While many maternity leave crowdfunding campaigns don’t reach maximum funding, when it comes to raising kids every penny helps.
