Whyte House MonogramsDebbie Whyte, founder of Whyte House Monograms, started the company in 2004 when her husband gifted her a small monogramming machine. She’s been selling from her home and shows around the area but is now settled into a pop-up in the Friendship Heights neighborhood of Montgomery County. Things have progressed rapidly in the monogramming world and WHM uses the latest technology in monogramming software and machinery. The business is a family affair, with daughter Morgan as business partner, son Roger as logo designer and social media guru and son, Ryan, providing encouragement and serving as occasional chauffer. Debbie serves on the Board of Children’s Hospital and the pop-up hosts a weekly charity event for various organizations throughout the area. Misterek began exploring leather work while living in Minneapolis. In 2012, she designed her first handbag collection and in 2013 she and her family moved to D.C. where MATINE was born. Today, MATINE is a full-time design and production studio on Capitol Hill and this summer, they’re sporting a spiffy pop-up in lavish Tysons Galleria Mall on level one across from Starbucks. DoughnutIn 2015, Brian and Pin Chanthapanya set out to bring their love of Malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts) to the DMV. They ended up developing a recipe based off the Hawaiian style Malasada, creating sweet doughnuts filled with chantilly cremes, mainly used in pastries In European bakeries. The dough, glazes, and fillings were first developed in the couple’s garage and today they operate a family-friendly shop in Downtown Historic Leesburg. Parents to three kids, Brian works through the night with the yeast-raised dough which takes over 12 hours to make from scratch and Pin joins him around 6 a.m. Their jams are made of real fruits, whips made from premium heavy cream, and custards made from fresh eggs. They try to introduce new, unique flavors weekly. They sell their doughnuts until they’re sold out and have a pop-up at Union Market through mid-August. The name, My Big Finds, comes from her children’s initials and represents the warm memories and stories from each piece’s past. Jodi worked in the brokerage industry for more than twenty years but left the corporate world to start this retail journey. The store features everything from vintage clothes to home goods and furniture.
