Macaron Mania Hits the District

Walk down M Street, in Georgetown, and you’ll notice there’s a new bakery in town. And it is not your run-of-the-mill sweets stop. Inspired by Parisian interior design, you and your kids will be glued to Laduree’s stunning display window and the dazzling array of pastel macarons (their specialty) showcased inside. It looks good enough to, well, eat!

Oldy but goody
The smell of
macarons (pronounced maca-ROHN), croissants and chocolates fill the air and you’ll just try to take everything in. Ladurée opened in Paris 155 years ago, with its tearoom giving men and women a chance to meet in public for the first time in the history of the famed city, and quickly gained international fame for its brightly-colored, uniquely flavored and delectable macarons.

Macarons (and more) for minis
Fret not! Ladurée likes kids. So much so, they even have a “Cherub Menu”. Yes, they think our kids are angels! For $20 your kids can soak up the Ladurée experience with fun choices like mini burgers, mini croque-monsieurs, scrambled eggs, fries, ice cream and of course, macarons! Got children with food allergies? Macarons are naturally gluten-free so that’s a big plus. There are some less kid-friendly macaron flavors like Sichuan pepper or cognac but certain popular flavors like pistacchio, vanilla, salted caramel, chocolate and lemon are a big hit with kids of all ages.

Get your goodies to go
The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, brunch, tea and aperitifs. Don’t have time to sit down? No worries, you can buy croissants (the rose one is amazing!)macarons, ice cream and french pastries in the boutique. Everything is made fresh and in house by experienced chefs in the pastry lab.

Stay tuned
Ladurée has more than 100 stores in 28 countries and, in addition to the Georgetown store, they plan to open a smaller shop in Union Station soon. In fact, the Union Station location will have “takeaway food for travelers, comprising of mix-and-match miniature sandwiches and salads in jars. How fun!
