A Sunday Fun Day at The Flying Circus

Trending Now

Planes are serious, serious business for many D.C. kids. Thanks, in part, to Disney (how many times has Junior seen that movie?). And it doesn’t hurt that the DMV is a hub for three international airports. Feed into their need for skyhigh speed by taking a mini-road trip to see The Flying Circus Aerodrome and Air Show in Bealeton, Va. Just 60 miles outside of D.C., the Flying Circus pays homage to the Golden Years of flying. Every Sunday (May-Oct), vintage 1920’s and 1930’s aircrafts put on a show reminiscent of the barnstorming days of airplanes (think: rolling aircrafts, wing walkers and sky divers). Who is ready for take-off?

Bird’s eye view
For an extra special pre-show treat, sign dad (or one of your brave big kids) up for an open cockpit airplane ride ($80). These rides are first come, first served and start at 11am (three and a half hours before the air show begins). If that’s not enough to get your little flyer stoked, at the end of the show, the audience is invited onto the field to look at the aircraft and talk with the pilots and ground crew.

Look up and enjoy the show
Bring lawn chairs or a blanket for your own picnic beforehand and enjoy sitting in the country and letting your kids run around to blow off steam. Or, grab a quick bite from Fifi’s Cafe the aerodome’s snack bar. Just don’t miss the aerialists portion of the show that features stunt people walking, hanging, and swinging from vintage crafts. Your furry friend is allowed to take in the sites, too, provided she stays on a leash and since the grass runway needs to be level, the Flying Circus is completely stroller-friendly.

Wings and more flying things
In addition to parachutists, aerialists and kiddie carnival plane rides, The Flying Circus hosts the Hot Air Balloon festival annually (Aug. 17-18). Kids can come at the crack of dawn (because that’s when the wake up anyways) to watch the hot air balloons being assembled before take off.

When: Every Sunday (May-Oct)
Cost: $15/adults; $7/kids 5-12; free/kids under 5

5114 Ritchie Rd. (Bealeton, Va)
