Disney Could Get Its First Latina Princess with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Help

Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda may help to create Disney’s first Latina princess, according to reports from Page Six. While neither Disney nor Miranda himself have confirmed the collab, rumors are swirling that Disney’s princess lineup is about to gain some much-need diversity.

Miranda’s father Luis told Page Six,  Lin-Manuel “is talking to Disney about a sequel to Moana, but the movie would be about a Latina princess.” If you’re not up on your Disney movie trivia, Miranda co-wrote the music for Moana, making him the obvious choice to head a sequel.

So what would this possible sequel look like? The original 2016 Disney flick followed the story of Moana, the daughter of a a Polynesian village chief. Clearly if the sequel has a Latina star, that Polynesian storyline is most likely out.

Sadly, we’ll all have to wait for more details. Disney is keeping mum on the subject and Miranda is currently in San Juan, Puerto Rico raising money for hurricane relief by reprising his titular role in his smash hit musical, Hamilton. But, if the rumors are indeed true, it looks like all of our kiddos could have a new princess to look forward to—and one that would be a huge step for Latina representation among Disney’s pantheon of princesses.
