So what is it this time? It’s a Duncan Hines recall: boxed cake mix is the possible (but not confirmed) cause of a recent Salmonella outbreak and five related illnesses. Representatives from Conagra Brands did not immediately return Red Tricycle’s request for comment.The November 2018 recall includes the brand’s Classic White, Classic Butter Golden, Signature Confetti and Classic Yellow cake mixes. For a full list of the recalled products, visit the FDA’s website here.Why the Cake Mix Was RecalledConagra Brands voluntarily recalled the boxed mixes following reports of five Salmonella cases. The FDA and CDC are currently investigating whether the mix is the cause of the outbreak or not.The affected individuals developed the illness following consumption of the boxed mix. The investigation revealed a positive Salmonella finding in in a retail sample of the company’s Classic White cake mix. According to the FDA, “While it has not been definitively concluded that this product is linked to the outbreak and the investigation is still ongoing, Conagra has decided to voluntarily recall the specific Duncan Hines variety identified (Classic White) and three other varieties (Classic Butter Golden, Signature Confetti and Classic Yellow) made during the same time period out of an abundance of caution.”Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain and cramping. Severe cases require hospitalization. Young children, elderly and individuals with a compromised immune system are most at risk. How to Tell If Your Cake Mix Is Part of the RecallThe boxed cake mixes include the product UPC codes:644209307500 644209307494 644209307593 644209414550 Visit the FDA’s website for a list of all affected products, including used by dates.What Parents Can DoDo not use the boxed mix. Throw the mix out or return it to the store where you purchased it. Whether you have this boxed mix, another brand or bake from scratch—never eat uncooked cake mix. Adding raw eggs to the mix can result in a serious infection, section as Salmonella.
