How Kristen Bell Gets Her Kids to Talk about Their Day Is So Ridiculously Easy

It’s that time of year again! It’s back to school time, and Kristen Bell’s latest parenting hack will help you to deal with the, “Nothing” and, “I dunno” answers that you get when you ask your kiddo what they did all day.

In an interview with POPSUGAR, Bell dished on her trick for getting her preschoolers to talk about their school days. Like just about every mom in America, Bell started getting those one-word answers in response to her after-school questions.

Instead of giving up and accepting that she’d never truly hear what her littles did during their hours away from her, she changed her approach. Bell told POPSUGAR, “Kids don’t naturally want to tell you about their day because they want to live in the moment—they don’t want to live in the past.”

So what did she do to get her kids to spill? She focused on one her primary parenting philosophies and explained it them.

Um, explained? That’s right. Instead of just asking her kids what they did, Bell explained why she wanted to know what they did at school. Hmm. Apparently making the question meaningful for her kiddos got her the results she was going for. And thank you Kristen Bell—now we all have a new after-school conversation strategy. Yay!
