10 Educational (and Fun!) Weekend Activities

Trending Now

You work your tail off all week long – parenting, working, cooking, cleaning, shopping.  You want your weekend filled with meaningful, enriching, educational and most of all FUN experiences you can do with your kids.  But who has time to find all these activities?  Not you, busy mom. Luckily, that’s exactly what we do!  We found 10 fabulous activities that will expand your mind, tickle your fancy, and provide a healthy dose of fun.  They’re all things that you can do together, that are great for a whole range of ages (from baby in the sling to Great Grandma) and that are open on weekends.   So dig in, start exploring, and feel your brain cells getting bigger.

KinderCare is dedicated to promoting an educational learning environment filled with fun and creativity. You can rest easy knowing that your kiddos are in a great place where they’re cultivating social and academic skills that will aid them now and for many years to come as they become doctors, lawyers, teachers and parents.

1. When you drive the 405, you hate the 405.  But viewed from the sky, our freeways become art.  Overdrive, the new exhibit at the Getty explores LA’s visionary buildings and roads in a way that fascinates adults and kids – and makes you want to get out and explore the city.

2. Calling Dr. Jones!  If your kids like to dig in the dirt, bring them for an archaeological adventure at the Skirball where they can sift and sort sand to find ancient artifacts.  (Don’t forget to stay and play in Noah’s Ark.)

3. And then there are the kids that dig in the dirt to uncover earthworms instead of artifacts.  They wade in ponds to turn up tadpoles, and run towards (instead of backing away from) things that slither.  Your budding Herpatologist will love a trip to LA Zoo’s LAIR.

4. You want to go out and Carpe Weekend.  They want to stay home and play Legos. Entice them out to play, and while they’re at it, learn the science of why and how their favorite toys work, at Science in Toyland at the Science Center.  (And while you’re here, you’ve got to visit the Endeavour.)

5. Cars and trucks and things that go delight kids of all ages, especially when you can actually sit or ride in them.  Oooh and ahh (and learn a little about the whys and hows along the way) over cars, planes and trains in one of these spots.

6. “But why, Mommy?”  and “But how, Daddy?” are frequent follow-ups to just about everything.  And though we’d love to have all the answers, sometimes we just don’t.  Rather than turning to Siri or Wikipedia, take your kiddo to the library and look it up together.  We’ve rounded up the best libraries in town for kids.

7. Strawberries don’t come from a plastic container.  Carrots don’t begin life as identical baby nuggets.  They all come from the ground – and fresh from the ground is when they taste best.  Take your tot to a farm to see just how fruits and vegetables grow and then pick your own strawberries.

8. What is your child’s métier?  Do they dabble in cooking?  Play best with clay?  Delight in candle making?  At Make Meaning, kids can indulge any and all creative impulses as they create and customize soaps and candles, paint ceramics, design glassware, decorate cakes and more.

9. You’d like to introduce your kids to art and explore the works of the masters toegther.  But where to begin? LACMA just started conducting Saturday tours which offer tips for a fun family museum visit, explores artworks that are popular with kids, and engages in playful observation and discussion (in Spanish and English).

10. The gold rush may be synonymous with Northern California, but did you know gold was discovered here first?   Go sift and pan for your own gold at the Autry Museum, and find out a little bit about the history of the wild, wild West.  (Cowboy hats optional.)
