You recycle, reuse, and even remember to take your own bags to the grocery store.

But before you pen that acceptance speech for Greenest Parent of the Year, don’t forget about the nasty habit you have every day when you fill the kids’ lunchboxes. You know, when you tuck the sammie and baby carrots into those evil little plastic sandwich bags that are a pollutant to our environment. Sure, you tell the kids to bring them home to use again, but it never happens.

This is the guilt trip Becky Harper and Karen Whorton had, and when they realized they were each throwing away about 10 bags a day, they knew they needed to right a very bad wrong.

The two West Seattle moms created ReUsies, plastic-free, reusable sandwich/snack bags that are 100 percent cotton and lined with leak-proof nylon. They can be machine washed and dried or even washed in the dishwasher. The two sizes – sandwich ($8.50) and snack ($6.50) — come in a variety of designs.

Harper and  Whorton say that each ReUsie has the potential to eliminate hundreds of plastic bags. Given that the  Environmental Protection Agency estimates 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide and that plastic bags make up over ten percent of debris found on U.S. coastlines, using ReUsies really could make a difference in the world and in your own life. “Ladies and Gentleman, I accept this award….”
