Barnsdall Park

Located in the Hollywood/Los Feliz area, Barnsdall Park is a surprisingly peaceful, kid-friendly park with loads of free parking (jackpot!). It’s also your Totally Awesome pick for the best park in the Los Angeles area. Angeleno families agree: Barnsdall Park is not only a fun place to walk around, it’s also a hit when it comes to classes, events, and artistic activities for your kiddos.

Marshall Lewy, President of the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation, recently took the time to chat with us about what makes this hub so awesome, how the park got started, and more. Read on:

Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do you think your customers value most about your business?

Marshall Lewy: Barnsdall Park is a recreational park as well as a dynamic and vibrant artistic and cultural destination. It has a world-class architectural attraction in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, and it also offers arts destinations for locals at the Municipal Art Gallery and Art Center, where affordable classes are

RT: What was the inspiration behind Barnsdall Park?

ML: Aline Barnsdall was an arts patron who donated the land and its Frank Lloyd Wright designed structures to the City of Los Angeles in 1927. She wanted to provide an accessible arts center to the community that incorporated and preserved the famous Hollyhock House as a crucial component.

RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?

ML: The Barnsdall Art Park Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the activities of our beloved park. We’ve found the source of our success has been communication with others who love the park and maintaining a strong connection with fans of the park.

RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing business with parenthood?

ML: Ha! I have a 2 year old girl and a boy on the way, and finding time to do volunteer work with the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation in addition to my regular job is growing more challenging. But it’s important to me that my kids embrace arts and culture from the earliest age, and being involved with Barnsdall Art Park is part of that mission. The Foundation offers a free art workshop for kids of all ages every Sunday, and I look forward to bringing my kids to it.

RT: What’s been your proudest moment in your work with the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation?

ML: I’m very proud of how we’ve grown awareness for Barnsdall Art Park in the community, and how we’ve raised a great deal of money to supplement activities. In Hollyhock House will reopen in the spring of 2014 after a significant renovation, and we will take the opportunity to tell the story of one of Los Angeles’ most dynamic architectural destinations and to expose more people to the rich history of Frank Lloyd Wright’s magnificent masterpiece and the wonderful art park that has developed around it.

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
