These days, it seems like are as many ice cream shops in So Cal as there are Starbucks! So if your family’s over the cone, but is still craving an icy cold treat (hello summer heat; that’s all of us!), we’ve discovered the perfect alternative in San Gabriel—Nomad Ice Pops. Serving up ice pops or “paletas,” as they’re formally known, Nomad is the sweetest way to get your delicious chill on in a variety of flavors made from fresh, whole fruits. From Whitewater to Guatemala to San Gabriel
Nomad Ice Pops owner, Geoff Jennings, first fell in love with paletas while working for a white water rafting company in Guatemala nine years ago. Like many of us, Jennings had grown up with good old fashioned popsicles from a box made from little more than frozen sugar water. Paletas opened his eyes to what real ice pops taste like—handcrafted from fresh, whole fruits and simple natural ingredients, he started experimenting with creations and different flavors on his own when he returned home to the states. Once his daughters came along, he wanted to give them a healthy frozen dessert and made even more of them, eventually turning his passion into a business.

Why Nomad Isn’t Nomadic
Opened on Father’s Day in San Gabriel, Nomad Ice Pops is quickly becoming a must-stop for Southern California families who are looking for yumtastic treats to beat the heat. Originally Jenning’s business plan was to be entirely mobile for sales; doing catering and events like food festivals, street fairs, farmers markets and the like. But he found a groovy little space in the historic mission district of San Gabriel, and it felt like the right fit. Nomad now features a retail counter, seating, and a quaint patio area out front so families can kick back and relax.

What’s on the Sticks
The Nomad menu rotates frequently, but crowd favorites are likely to stay around a majority of the time. Because they craft the paletas in small batches, how long a particular flavor sticks around depends a lot on how customers respond to it.  Jennings also prides himself in highlighting seasonal fruits. Since the cherries are awesome right now, he just made a batch of incredible Cherry Limeade. But the most popular flavors with little ones so far have been Strawberry Mint, Passion Fruit, and Banana dipped in Chocolate.  Nom, nom, nom…totally worth a trip to SG, we say!
