Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s memoir is so much more than just another autobiography. Becoming offers readers a deep look into Mrs. Obama’s life, from plenty of historic triumphs to very, very personal losses. The former FLOTUS opens up in a major way about her and Barack’s struggles with infertility.

Infertility is a common problem for many women. According to the CDC, 12 percent of women ages 15 to 44 have difficulty getting or staying pregnant. Even though infertility is faced by millions, it’s still fraught with plenty of stigma, like the quiet little secret that no one wants to talk about. Obama’s candid admission has given infertility and pregnancy loss, particularly for women of color, some much-needed public awareness.

Even though it may seem like Obama leads a pretty charmed life—she’s super-successful, brims with confidence, has two awesomely amazing daughters, and of course, is married to a former President of the United States)—she’s not immune to the struggles of motherhood—or the struggles of getting to motherhood.

Reportedly, the former First Lady’s writes about having a miscarriage and using IVF to conceive both of her daughters, Sasha and Malia. During an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, Obama shared, “I didn’t know how common miscarriages were, because we don’t talk about them. We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken.”

Thanks to the former FLOTUS infertility and pregnancy loss don’t have to remain taboo subjects that we keep to ourselves. With such a prominent public figure sharing her story, hopefully other women can take comfort in knowing that infertility or miscarriage isn’t their fault. And even more importantly, that they aren’t alone.
