Mindy Kaling Cuts Through Criticism of Working Moms in New Interview

Since becoming a new mom, Mindy Kaling has been pretty private about life with her now nine-month-old daughter Katherine, but she recently opened up about juggling work with parenthood and life as a single mom for PEOPLE. Read on to see how Kaling manages to keep it all together.

Being a working mom in Hollywood can be challenging, especially as you get older, Kaling explained in a recent interview with PEOPLE. “You see all these photos of writers and you’re like, ‘Oh, there’s nobody with gray hair or anyone older than 40.’ And I’m 39, so that’s frightening, especially when you have a baby,” Kaling said. “But what I’ve been noticing more and more is that there are more working women. And the writers’ room…is one of the most ageist places ever.”

Kaling admits she is lucky to already be at a place in her career that allows her some flexibility. Obviously that’s not always the case. No matter in what industry you work, Kaling says that becoming a mom can change peoples’ impression of you and the quality of your work.

“I think it’s a tiny bit sexist as well, and people are worried that because you have kids you won’t be able to pay more attention,” Kaling says. “Any mother will tell you it makes you so razor-sharp focused on your career because you’re so worried about money.”

Motherhood for Kaling isn’t all work and no play, however. The comedian joked that being a mom is all about “finding activities for children in three-hour pockets of time for the rest of your life” and endlessly shopping for baby items on Amazon.

“That’s all I do. I’m stand-up comedian,” she said. “I do a one-woman show for her, and it’s so fun.
