Mindy Kaling’s Speech about Single Motherhood Is as Real as It Gets

Graduation is a time when hopes, dreams, fears and all kinds of “Uh-oh, what the heck do I do now?” feelings start flying. Mindy Kaling’s commencement speech, at her alma mater Dartmouth College, hit all of those points—and so much more!

The single mom celeb’s speech was entirely empowering and totally relatable. Kaling spoke about what it was like for her in the days following the birth of her daughter, “After my daughter was born in December, I remember bringing her home and being in my house with her for the first time and thinking, ‘Huh, according to the movies and TV, this is traditionally the time when my mother and spouse are supposed to be here, sharing this experience with me’.”

Not only is Kaling a single mama, but her mother passed away in 2012. That means she doesn’t have the benefit of a mother’s helping hands or an S.O. shouldering some of the baby care. She added, in her speech, “And I looked around and I had neither. And for a moment it was kind of scary, like, ‘Can I do this by myself?’ But then that feeling went away because the reality is, I’m not doing it by myself. I’m surrounded by family and friends who love and support me.”

Those graduating seniors may not exactly have to deal with the mommy issues that Mindy had to handle, but the message behind Kaling’s speech is still totally empowering—for everyone!
