This Mom Turned Her Kid’s Closet Into a Secret Hideaway & It’s Magical

Do we ever grow out of the magic of having our own, secret and special place to hide? There’s a place in all of us that craves time to get away, and that’s why this mom turned her daughter’s closet into the ultimate hiding spot. Denver-based interior design Laura Medicus took an ordinary armoire and placed it in front of her 11-year-old daughter’s closet (where the doors had previously been removed) and the result is magical.

Taking a page from C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Medicus’ design looks rather ordinary. It’s only once you step inside the wardrobe and through the secret opening that you see this amazing secret spot.

Just in case you’re having a hard time picturing how this space is laid out, Laura provides the blueprint and a photo on entering the space. The back of the armoire is cut open (and reinforced) then put flush with the wall to cover up the closet opening.

The existing closet is cleared out to make way for cozy items like a chair, pouf ottoman, crate that serves as an end table and a reading lamp.

Because this hidey hole takes over the closet, space is made in the far corner to still accommodate shoes, clothes and accessories, just in small numbers. As you can see, there’s still plenty of room for all the necessities a pre-teen and teen girl needs.

On her blog, Laura states that her daughter has “a few years of enjoying it like this and then we’ll move the armoire and set it up as a “normal” closet.” All of the modifications were budget friendly, and many involved free or thrift store finds. The best part is it appears there’s room for mom in there!

If you can’t find us, it’s because we’ve made our own Narnia-inspired wardrobe and we’re getting a few minutes of peace and quiet.

What do you think of this amazing secret spot? Would you make one for your kids? Let us know in the comments below!
