There’s nothing new about coming of age and all the challenges that come along with surviving high school, but for Netflix’s new comedy series, Atypical, the perspective is a little bit different, with the main character being a teen on the autism spectrum.

The new Netflix comedy follows high school senior, Sam Gardner, as he navigates his way into the tough transition to adulthood. Sam faces some differences growing up, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t deal with the same awkward things every teenager can relate to, from crushes to first dates. “Sam’s honesty is the most relatable part of him,” Keir Gilchrist, the actor who portrays Sam, told USA Today. “Most people will relate to the way he puts into the words the difficulties (of) dating. The way he describes some situations is basically how everyone feels, but most people don’t actually put it into words.”

The series creator, Robia Rashid, consulted with a California State University professor who worked at UCLA’s Center for Autism Research and Treatment, because she wanted to make sure she told Sam’s story authentically. Ultimately, however, every child with autism is different and this is just one family’s story. Rashid hopes to tell a story that is relatable to all audiences, whether or not they have experience with autism. “The theme is: No one’s normal,” she explained.

Atypical also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rappaport, as Sam’s parents. The first season has eight episodes and premieres on Netflix ‪August 11, 2017.
