8. Twenty-One Elephants and Still Standing

By April Jones Prince

It took 14 years to build the Brooklyn Bridge connecting Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. But when it was completed in 1883, some people were afraid to cross it. So the creator of the "Greatest Show on Earth", P.T. Barnum marched 21 elephants up Broadway, past City Hall, and over the bridge to Brooklyn to prove it could hold the weight of 21 elephants.

Make the story come alive at: The Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian Walk, accessible from City Hall, Broadway at Chambers St., Financial District.
