Judo is a relatively new martial art, derived from the older jujutsu in 1882. Unlike Karate, which puts emphasis on kicks and chops, judo is all about taking down your opponent without actually causing them harm. Expect your little ones to be throwing other kids over their shoulders, or wrestling them down onto the mat.
For a chance to see Judo in action, drop by Oishi Judo, located right across the Children’s Museum of Art downtown. Oishi Judo is a long-running Judo club, and they welcome anyone who wants to sit in on their classes for free. Kids over five are welcome to take classes here, where the club’s founder has been instructing (and painting) for over 50 years.
You can also try one of Judo’s off-shoots, like Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, which is more about grappling and fighting low to the ground. At Academy Five Points kids three through 12 years of age can get Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu training with the aim of boost strength, flexibility, and, as with most martial arts, discipline. And of course, have fun doing it!
