Capoeira is a much more active martial art, and is perfect if you’re looking for something between aerobics and martial art. Capoeira mixes martial art-style discipline, with the fun and dynamic workout of dance, music and acrobatics.
At the Capoeira Guanabara you won’t be seeing your kids soaring through the air like acrobats, but you will see them releasing energy, getting fit and finding a physical outlet for their creativity. (It will also remind you that there is “art” in martial arts.) The classes here admit students ages seven through 11, so this is one for the older kids.
Younger kids can enjoy the fun fight dancing of capoeira at the New York Capoeira Center, which accepts children as young as three years old. The program here develops focus, discipline, and respect just like any other martial art, but also aims to develop leadership skills and a foster a feeling of community. You can schedule a free trial class to see if your kid gets a kick out of this martial art.
