New York City is going to the dogs—in the best way. Down on Avenue A, Boris & Horton, New York City’s first ever Department of Health-approved dog-friendly coffee shop just opened. Meanwhile, Frolic Kids, NYC’s first ever dog-immersive activity center, has been entertaining kids with after-school programs and educational activities featuring their crew of friendly guide dog graduates since the Upper East Side space opened in October.

Boris & Horton: A father/daughter team open a café
Coppy Holzman and his daughter Logan Mikhly had always dreamed of opening a café where dogs would be as welcomed as their ‘parents.’ Their dream came true six weeks ago with the recent opening of Boris & Horton, a hip and welcoming café that’s already a favorite gathering place for East Village (and doggie-loving) families.

Safe, Sanctioned & Sanitary
The cafe is Health Department-approved because food is prepared in a completely separate, no-dogs-allowed area. Owners with dogs on leash enter through separate door that leads to the retail area, and a there’s separate seating area for canines and their owners. (Be prepared: it’s a small place with a few tables, so you may have to wait for a seat.) Dogs are required to be on leash at all times.

Humans can nosh on items from a  toast menu that features ingredients from 20 local vendors. The avocado toast, Roasted Tomato and Tahini Toast and Labneh and Banana Toast are super-yummy—accompanied by The Lassy (a latte made with house-made lavender syrup). Of course, canines can indulge as well. thanks to a doggie bakery counter featuring Pawtisserie treats like ‘Paw’Reos’ and ‘Blueberry Coconut Bliss Pupcakes.’

You’ll also find free ‘GIF Booth’ with doggie costumes at the ready to dress up your pup (you can then e-mail the file to your pet’s adoring fans),  and a retail area with some of the coolest pet accessories we’ve ever seen. With a half-dozen adoption events taking place at the space so far (check the cafe’s Facebook page for the latest happenings and events), do not be surprised if your child ends up not only wanting a dog but wanting to spend every spare minute at this happy place. Best of all, you and the family (plus dog) can decamp here starting at seven a.m., seven days a week and then stroll over to Tompkins Square park, said to be home to the first ever dog run—ever!

Frolic Kids: Doggie 101
The Biscuits and Bath team expanded their grooming, daycare and dog-walking offerings this fall when they opened Frolic Kids, an independently-run space that merges learning about dogs and having fun. For example, if you have a child who is very fearful of dogs, Frolic offers hands-on classes with their three resident guide dogs—either golden retrievers or labs—all in partnership with the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, Long Island.

These patient, gentle dogs are on-hand for this class as well as a wide variety of other classes, such as Scent Detection and Nutrition (during this class kids make pupsicles!), afterschool programs and even dog-themed birthday parties in the sunny space.

Doggie Due Diligence
For the truly canine-crazy kid—and families thinking about welcoming a new furry friend into the home—consider signing your child up for Frolic’s 12-week Ambassador program, which includes lessons in training and caring for a dog. Bonus: After your child completes this training, you can even ‘borrow’ one of the guide dogs for the weekend.

Finally, new moms who want to acclimate a baby to your dog, consider this: If you want to book a Frolic class but don’t feel like heading to the Upper East Side, Frolic will come to you with a dog and a lesson plan. See website for prices and details.
