DUMBO: A Magical Neighborhood Sans the Elephant

While it shares no relation to the floppy eared elephant, DUMBO (translation: down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass) is still a magical place to explore with kids. The cobble stone streets winding between hip shops, old warehouse buildings and restaurants make walking around half the adventure. Be sure to bring your camera, the waterfront with magnificent bridge and skyline views acts as stunning backdrops for family photos.

Play
The meticulously restored 1922 classic Jane’s Carousel fits right in with the historic vibe of the neighborhood. The cost per ride is a throwback too—just $2! Kids can also sail on the ship themed equipment at the sweet Brooklyn Bridge Park playground.

Eat
Start the day with the perfect almond croissant and coffee at authentic French bakery Almondine a favorite for local families. Cap the day with something sweet, like a decadent scoop from the Jacques Torres Ice Cream Shop. Or, fill pouches with licorice, sour or gummy candies at the retro Deweys Candy.

Shop
The variety of cool boutiques, modern furniture stores and other specialty shops is surprisingly rich considering the neighborhood’s size. There’s plenty for an afternoon of browsing for you, but today is all about the kids, right? Tasteful clothing, creative toys, and the occasional haircut (check website for schedule) are in store at the delightful Pomme. Half Pint Citizens stocks everything from nursery furniture to gear, clothing and toys. Bookworms of all ages will love flipping though the well-selected titles at powerHouse Books.

Get there: Subway, bus or by water taxi at Fulton Ferry Landing.
