To Promote Cultural Understanding: America to Zanzibar: Muslim Cultures Near and Far

The Children's Museum of Manhattan is unveiling the latest installment of its Global Cultural Exhibition Series, "America to Zanzibar: Muslim cultures Near and Far." (Previous exhibits explored Ancient Greece, China and Japan.) This new 3,000-square-foot exhibit designed for kids ages two to 10  explores the diversity of Muslim cultures in New York City, the U.S. and abroad. Filled with interactive, multimedia elements, American to Zanzibar showcases the cultural expressions of various Muslim communities around the world. Kids can pretend to buy and sell in the Global Marketplace, climb aboard multi-level Indian Ocean <em>dhow</em> (boat) or life-size camel in the Trade Route section, and marvel at the myriad architectural styles of mosque on a 21-foot curved screen in the Architecture area. A Courtyard area explores the key elements of a traditional Muslim courtyard, and visitors can sample verses from renowned Muslim poets at a central fountain. A final section, The American Home is a model contemporary living room filled with objects donated by American Muslims.
