An outing to see how maple syrup is made combines many of our favorite things: the first signs of spring, fresh air with the family, a double-hitter of education (science and history) and, of course, tasting the sweet stuff — sometimes even with pancakes. We found a maple sugaring outing for all tastes, from back-to-basics demonstrations at nature preserves to full-on fests and pancake brunches. Click on through to find your sweet spot!

For a Maple Sugar Fest: Greenburgh Nature Center

Head to the Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale for a day of celebrating spring at its annual maple sugaring party that includes making seasonal crafts, candy and porridge. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., staffers will demonstrate the process of making maple sugar, from tapping trees (kids can taste it straight from the source) to boiling, to enjoying the sweet stuff. Visitors will learn the history of harvesting syrup such as the techniques used by Native Americans and early pioneers. Click here to buy tickets in advance for a discount rate.
