Making It Here: Meet 14 NYC Power Moms

Read next

Sure, the label “Power Mom” can be a bit intimidating — especially in this city. (Do they sleep? Have talons? What’s the deal?) But we promise, after reading about this group of awesome, accomplished women, even the most wary among you will feel pumped. Representing fields ranging from design, media, education, science, fashion, finance and beyond — and often possessing a killer entrepreneurial streak — these ladies are inspiring examples of sisters doin’ it for themselves, while also making family a priority. (Oh, but “Work/Life” balance? They all kind of call B.S. on that concept, and offer their own take on it.) Click through to meet your new lady-crushes!

Kathy Zucker, Author & Entrepreneur

Kathy Zucker, mom to three (Emily, 10; Josh, eight, and Ellie, four) readily admits she is a "crazy person" and has her "fingers in a lot of pies." In a past vocational life, the Hoboken, Nj resident worked as a marketing director in financial services and healthcare; since then she's been a journalist and blogger, founded three startups, and written a book, Five, about parenting and career. (The title of the book, which won a "Shorty Award", is inspired by the number of people in her family.) She turned down her dream job — the one she always thought she'd been working towards — to write her book, and prides herself on getting things DONE. "No matter how seemingly insurmountable the task before me, if it is a priority then I do whatever it takes to complete it thoroughly and well. That often means following unorthodox and risky paths. But somehow it always turns out well in the end."

Yet Another Reason To Like Her: She owns it, and loves it: "Yes, I am the hot mess mom who wears pajamas to school drop-off and pickup."

Work/Life: "Embrace the chaos. Seriously, don't even try to control what is going to happen. I make plans on a day-by-day basis. As in, 'What is the weather like today?' 'Is anyone sick?' And then I offer the kids options and we figure out what to do. I find that when I give my kids choices, they are invested and enthusiastic about whatever we choose, whether it is staying home so mom can work while the kids decorate the front door for Halloween, or heading off to parts unknown. (You know, with a broken GPS.)"
