Parents Want This More than a High-Paying Salary, According to New Study

Being able to pay the bills is key, but when it comes to what parents really want financially, money isn’t always at the top of the list. According to a new study, parents want work-life balance more than they want a high salary.

A new survey from FlexJobs has found that parents rank work-life balance well above salary when it comes to considering a new job offer. Work-life balance ranked as the top criteria among 84 percent of parents surveyed versus 75 percent who listed salary as the most important. The survey included 1,100 U.S. parents with kids aged 18 or younger.

The other top criteria that parents found most important in selecting a new job were flexible work options (75 percent) and work schedule (72 percent). All of these were listed far above items like health insurance and paid maternity leave, too.

Work-life balance was described as the number one reason why many parents were seeking flexible work. Sixty-nine percent of the working parents who responded said they have left or considered leaving a job because it lacked flexibility and thirty-one percent said they would consider taking a pay cut in exchange for the option to telecommute as much as they wanted.

“Flexible employment gives people more control over how, when, and where they get things done, which is vitally important for groups of people like working parents who have many responsibilities,” said Sara Sutton, founder and CEO of FlexJobs.

“Whether it’s working remotely, having a flexible schedule, working part-time, or freelancing, people with flexible work options are better able to structure their work so that they can preempt many of the clashes that typically happen between work and life. Too often, flexibility is seen as a nice-to-have perk, but for many people, perhaps the majority of people who use flexible work options, flexibility is a necessity, and without it they might not be able to participate in the workforce at all.”
