Ever get stuck in traffic on the Sunset Highway with hungry, cranky kids? The easily passed-by West Slope neighborhood is a hidden gem where you can get a great sandwich in a casual atmosphere, pick up a delicious pastry and shop for high-quality kids resale items before hitting the road again recharged and happy.

West Slope is shaped like a floppy triangle and bordered by the end of Walker Road, the Sunset Highway, and Canyon Road (north of Raleigh Hills, east of Vista Hills, and southwest of Sylvan and Bridlemile). So the next time you’re stuck in the car with antsy kids, take a moment to detour down Canyon Road for some Portland-style, family-friendly fun. 

Emilie Dessert Cafe
Casual restaurants with flexible seating are awesome for kids. At Emilie Dessert Cafe you can pile onto the couch, sit at the family table, or tuck into a standard four-top. The pastries and desserts are great, (their motto is “you deserve some good treats”!) but the real surprises here are the soup and Korean specialties. The creamy sausage kale soup is the perfect for a chilly day and the Korean beef sandwich is packed with flavor and authentic kimchee. You’ll also find Standard sandwiches and a daily soup.

Canyon Grille
Portland’s very first Dairy Queen was the original occupant of the funky digs where Canyon Grille now resides. The owner, Perry, has stayed true to the diner feel with delicious burgers, fries, shakes and signature sandwiches. Make sure to try the chef’s special pork chile verde. It’s slow-cooked all day and has a killer kick! Canyon Grille also has salads for a lighter meal, and you can stop by with the whole team on Monday nights for all-you-can-eat spaghetti.
