Best Spots for a Mother/Son Day Out in Portland

If school, homework and relentless sports games are leaving no room for bonding with your kid, it’s high time to treat him to a night (or day) out on the town. First begin with a meal from our list of kids-eat-free dining in Portland, then round it out with a fun activity below to reconnect with your little man.

Farm Hop on Sauvie Island
One of the best things about Portland is the bounty of fresh produce available at all times. From berries in the summer to pumpkins in the fall, this picker’s wonderland is perfect for a mother/son day out. Take him to one of the farms on Sauvie Island, fill him up with warm hot chocolate and start picking! Afterward there are plenty of picnic tables or hay bales to sit and enjoy some together time with fresh popped kettle corn and the fruits of your labor.

Ride the Rails in Mount Hood
If the words “All Aboard” get your little guy gushing about the power of the rails, it’s time to head up to Hood River and enjoy a train ride together. The Mount Hood Railroad puts events on throughout the year, allowing little conductors to experience the joy of traveling by train. In the winter he can marvel at falling snow on the way to Santa’s village, while the summer brings Thomas the Train to town! Regardless of the event, your little caboose will eat up the quality time as you choo choo your way to town.

Portland Police Stables
If he prefers rides of the equestrian kind, your little guy is going to love visiting the Portland Police Stables in downtown Portland! This working stable can house up to 16 horses at once and is a part of the Portland Police Bureau’s Mounted Patrol Unit. Phone calls to set up a viewing are highly recommended.

Go Fish!
Fishing is not just a summer activity! Most area lakes and ponds are open all year long and on a crisp and sunny fall day, a trip to the lake can be a relaxing adventure! Check out our list of fun and kid friendly fishing holes for an afternoon in nature with your little fisherman. Check websites to find the best fed ponds!

Climb at the Portland Rock Gym
Want to climb into the sky? Strap on some climbing gear, gather your courage and climb together up one of the indoor walls at Portland Rock Gym. With a slack line, king swing, huge cargo net, zip-line and other high rope and bouldering elements, the Portland Rock Gym is the perfect bonding activity for rainy-day fun. And if you decide this date is the tops, you can buy a Kids Climb card ($20 for five climbs) to continue the fun.
