March Family Happenings in Portland

What’s going on in Portlandia this month? We’ve got the scoop on the upcoming events you won’t want to miss…

Kids Shows at Mississippi Pizza
Spelling, Music, and Family trivia are all on deck at Mississippi Pizza Pub this month. Is your kid a W-H-I-Z at spelling? Kids ages 5-18 are welcome to come strut their spelling stuff on the Mississippi Pizza stage the first Saturday of every month. Three difficulty levels give everyone a chance to play. Winners take home fun prizes, and every speller gets a treat. Sign-ups start at 12:45 pm, and spelling starts at 1:00 pm.

Family and kids’ music options are aplenty. Mr. Ben brings his singers and stompers program for kids under six on Wednesday afternoons; Professor Banjo’s Old Time Play Party and Lorna Miller’s Little Kids Jamboree alternate the sing-a-longs and dance steps on Saturdays.

New at the joint is Quizissippi Junior on the second Saturday of the month. Why should grown-ups have all the fun? Portland’s only kid-friendly trivia event invites your whole family to “the best trivia on Saturday afternoons on Mississippi Avenue.” Questions for both adults and kids, multimedia clips, physical challenges, and plenty of great music mean a fun challenge and a good time for all. Teams of up to five players play FREE for fun prizes. Sign-ups start at 12:45 pm, and quizzing starts at 1:00 pm.

Music and Movement at Mudpuddles Toys
Join Ms. Eddi in song and rhythm, and become a part of the MudPuddles Band. This popular activity is totally free (as long as you bring a smile and a singing voice!). Toddlers and preschoolers learn fun songs that teach and delight, and get to giggle and jiggle and sing. Starts at 10am every Monday and lasts about 30 minutes.

See a Puppet Play
You will be floored by the performances your kids and their friends will create at David Freleng’s performance / workshop, now showing at Milagros Boutique every Friday at 10:30 am. Participants create their own shadow puppet play. Using simple materials, children are encouraged to let their creativity and imagination run rampant as they are in control of what happens in the story. $3 suggested donation per walking human.

Also, be sure to note that Penny Walter is taking her Sesame-Street style puppet shows on the road throughout the month. The imaginative shows of Penny Puppet Productions take kids on a magical musical journey packed full of comedy, laughter and  audience participation. Shows blur the boundaries between  fantasy and reality to create a fun make believe world where anything can happen and usually does. Check Penny’s website for showtimes and locations.

Climb Mt. Tabor
A real volcano, within city limits! As the weather gets nicer, you can hike, bike, climb or just drive up to the top of Mt. Tabor (pictured) for some of the most amazing views within city limits. Look to the west, over the Willamette, downtown and into the West Hills; look to the east for glimpses of Mt. Hood, and Mt. St. Helens. The park is filled with tons of trails, including many easy loops. A shady, playground at the top is a nice place to hang out and play. Mt. Tabor is truly beautiful and a must-visit family destination.
