Fresh Spots To Feed Your Sushi-holics

Who knew that our little foodies were so well-versed in the ways of sushi? They might not quite have a grasp on their chopsticks, but they know how to chow down on nigiri and rolls like a pro. Luckily, Portland is rife with sushi bars and restaurants that encourage kids, some even make special accommodations for them. We’ve gathered 5 great picks for sushi where your petite pescavores will be happily munching away while you take advantage of those oh-so-glorious mid-week happy hours.

Bamboo Sushi
Naturally, the world’s first certified sustainable sushi restaurant would be in Portland. Bamboo Sushi isn’t the place to go for a quick in-and-out sushi meal with the kids – you’re going to want to take your time to enjoy their delicious menu (as much as the kids will allow, at least!). Despite not being a sushi restaurant that you’ll find on any old family-friendly sushi list, Bamboo is extremely accommodating to children. Bamboo Sushi has even partnered with KidSafe Seafood to make sure that they and their customers are well informed about the types of seafood that are safe for children and pregnant mothers.

Sushi Hana
There are so many reasons why families love coming to Sushi Hana locations for lunch or dinner – first, the conveyor belt, which seems to keep the kids entertained for the entire meal. Also, the great selection of kid-friendly menu items, including yummy fresh fruit, and more often than not, the chef will whip up something special for little diners. The price is always right at Sushi Hana too – don’t miss their sushi happy hours for $1.00 sushi plates – perfect for filling hungry sushi-loving little bellies!

Mio Sushi
With locations all around Portland, making it easy to find one no matter where you live (Vancouver too!), Mio Sushi is hardly a chain. We are big fans of Mio Sushi because they are one of the only sushi restaurants that offers a specific children’s menu, with kid sized portions – and prices – that make for happy kids and happy parents. Choose from a list of different bento box options to create the perfect sushi meal for your kiddo or add non-sushi elements such as teriyaki or gyoza. They’ll even get a special healthy treat from the chef at the end of the meal – often a little orange carved into the shape of an animal – a thoughtful touch!

Marinepolis Sushi Land
Honestly, we’re not completely sure how conveyor belts and sushi became synonymous with each other, but the kids certainly aren’t complaining and parents are on board as well. With six locations around Portland, including Vancouver, Beaverton and Clackamas, Sushi Land has the conveyor belt sushi thing down! There are tables along the conveyor, instead of a sushi bar, making it easy for families with younger sushi lovers to eat together. Plus, the prices are inexpensive for those impulse grabs off the belt. There isn’t a ton of “fluff” when it comes to Sushi Land – no fish tacos or other semi-sushi related menu items, so be prepared to actually eat sushi when you come here!

Sushi Mazi
The sushi at Sushi Mazi is certainly good enough that they don’t need gimmicks to get families in the door, but we still love the fun and unexpected menu items that set them apart from other sushi restaurants! Everyone – even the kids – will get a kick out of the grasshopper sushi appetizer and sushi with Pop Rocks on top? What can you say about that – other than you should try it! Beyond the fun stuff, Sushi Mazi is a favorite for Portland families because both the atmosphere and the food is delightful – not too casual, great for when you want more than just a quick dinner and also a good spot for date nights.
