Raddish Kids just won a Totally Awesome Award for Super-Cool Subscription Services. We recently spoke to them about their experience as a business owner, the best advice they’ve ever received and more. Hear what they have to say below!

Raddish Kids

Red Tricycle: Your community recently voted you “Super-Cool Subscription Services” – what do your customers value most about your business?
Raddish Kids: Parents and kids love how Raddish brings them together in the kitchen and at the dinner table. Time is about the most cherished commodity in our culture right now, and a fun, interactive, and educational cooking project is a great way to connect without a screen!

RT: What do you want people to know about your business that they don’t already know?
RK: That anybody can cook and enjoy it! Indeed we all have to eat, so finding a fun, healthful way to understand more about food and share with friends and family is a pretty simple, lasting way to improve one’s quality of life. Oh, and kids who cook, eat! (even veggies!)

RT: How did your business get started and what was the motivation?
RK: Our founder (and my wife!) Samantha Barnes was a middle-school educator and realized that many of her students were aspiring foodies who lacked the knowledge and experience to make healthful lunch choices. That led her to create Kitchen Kid, a leading cooking school and camp serving the Los Angeles area. Raddish cooking kits were born out of the desire to provide this same edible education to kids and families across the country. My background is in digital marketing and I joined the cause in July to keep growing the company!

RT: Tell us, what do you start your morning with: 1. coffee 2. tea 3. mimosa 4. water 5. all of the above.
RK: Coffee, coffee, coffee! But I try to sneak a glass of water in there at some point.

RT: What is the most awesome thing a customer has ever done for you?
RK: People share the coolest Raddish action photos on our Instagram and Facebook pages. There’s nothing better than seeing a child’s pride and satisfaction at cooking something with their own hands!’

RT: What is your biggest pet peeve as a business owner?
RK: Owning a business allows for a lot of freedom and autonomy, but it’s a 24-hour-a-day gig! Your name is on the door so to speak, so you feel an obligation to customers, employees and vendors that’s pretty ironclad…but most business owners wouldn’t trade that for anything.

RT: How do you keep your stress levels down?
RK: Finding a way to somehow turn off the “business” setting in your brain is pretty key. That can come through exercise, family game night, a good book, political jabbering on CNN, or Häagen-Dazs ice cream bars. Some methods are more sustainable than others.

RT: What’s your secret superhero power as a business owner?
RK: Clear communication and trying to be yourself as much as possible. If you’re not having fun to some extent, it’s going to eventually show.

RT: Tell us, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (as a parent or business owner)?
RK: If you’re running a business and have small children, to some degree your life is going to be a blur. There will be times you feel like you are failing at both. But then your 6 year-old will announce that one day she wants to start a business just like her mom. And then you realize, you’re actually winning.

RT: How about the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
RK: “Your kids will sleep on their own eventually.” Based on the facts on the ground in our family, this hasn’t been true.

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
RK: Readers can enter REDTRI5 at checkout on our site to take $5 off a new membership
