Getting Saucy for the HolidaysApplesauce

Christmas and Hannukah are on the horizon, and if your little girl’s personality stands out in a crowd, you’ll want a holiday dress that’s just as unique as she is. Applesauce Designs, a collaboration between sisters Elizabeth and Monica Buenrosto, was created out of the same desire for fun and whimsical clothing. Her niece Belen’s glowing spirit and ever-so-cute face inspired Elizabeth to sew, and now, both auntie and mommy create one-of-a-kind handmade and vintage inspired garments to celebrate a growing girl’s originality and undeniable adorableness.

Applesauce dresses are made using Monica and Elizabeth’s favorite materials: vintage fabrics and buttons, retro prints, raw silk, embroidery thread, lace, and delicate fabrics, giving dresses a sense of texture and fullness, as well as vibrant colors to match any in a garden. Beyond the fabric store, they explore everything from flea markets and thrift stores to garage sales and estate sales to put the unique look and feel of their dresses together.

The end result is a dress like the Mandelynne Tulip Dress, filled with delicate pastel tulips on soft silk material. The top of the dress is lined with black silk, while the bottom half has a layer of colored chiffon. Or there’s the Olive Party Dress, made with a vintage fabric with small imperfections that only add to its uniqueness.
