You spent summer splashing around Stafford Park, picnicked and played at Washington Park, and ventured to the Junior Museum & Zoo at Rinconada Park. Now what? Time to check out the Peninsula’s hidden gems. They may be just around the corner from your house or a few short miles from your family’s favorite hood. Either way, these (formerly) secret spots are worth exploring!

Parkside Aqautic Park, San Mateo

Why it’s great: It’s a beach with clear skies and sunshine overhead. Though the Bay Area’s beaches are beautiful, they are all too often blanketed by fog. “Karl” rarely sets foot on the bank of Seal Slough in San Mateo, which is home to a sandy and swimmable beach, two playgrounds, and frequent duck crossings by adorable little duck families.

Where: 1595 Seal Street, San Mateo, bordering the Marina Lagoon

What to know: There are regular story times at Marina Public Library just down the way. The beach and books combo make a visit extra worth it.
