Taking Art To The Streets: Italian Street Painting Marin

Read next

Italian Street Painting Marin is kinda like the Brigadoon of art festivals, where for one weekend only, local street painters, a.k.a. Madonnaris, chalk up the streets of downtown San Rafael with mind-blowing images and then, at the end of the day on Sunday, watch their masterpieces get washed away. Bring the whole family out on the weekend of June 29-30 for this cool cultural event that quite literally, won’t last for long.

Go: Sat., June 29th: 10:00 am – 7:00 pm, Sun., June 30th: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

Getting There: The festival is held in downtown San Rafael between 5th and A Streets, so best bet is to find parking at one of the parking garages in the area and walk over.

What to Do: There will be an entire street filled with the creative designs of artists from the Bay Area and the all over the world! Some are sponsored squares, and others are just pure imagination. Besides gawking at the incredible images being conjured before the very eyes, and feet, there are a couple of opportunities for the kids to try their hand at being a madonnari.

For just $10 kiddos ages 2-12 can get their very own square and draw up something super awesome. If just having a scribble is more appealing, try the Children’s Avenue on A Street, where kids of all ages can help create a patchwork quilt of images.

When tired of checking out the artwork head for the entertainment stage, host to an eclectic range of musical talent. There will funky tunes from Soul Jah Family Band, a lil’ love for New Orleans jazz with Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic and a big shout out to Verdi on his 200th birthday.

Insider Tip: See if you can spot the highlighted Madaronni’s work, which will include a Taiko drummer piece, a Venetian theme and a music piece. Word on the street is that a flash-mob might even take place with some real Taiko drummers!

What to Eat: There are about a million and one yummy spots to dine in downtown San Rafael but there will also be food available for purchase at the festival. Food sponsors include: Il Davide, Cafe Arrivederci, Frantoio, Whole Foods, West End Cafe, Napoli Pizza, Upper Crust Pies and more! Mom and Dad will enjoy adult beverages from Lagunitas Brewing Company and Treasury Wine Estates.

Cost: $5/Adult, Kids 13 and Under. Free/Children 12 and Under
