Go: Year-round, weather permitting. The family-friendly Friday Nights on Main summer series runs from June – August.

Approximate travel time: 25 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge, or a 30-minute ferry ride.

What to see: Enjoy the gorgeous bay views from Shoreline Park. Watch the boats come in, look for cormorants as they dive and resurface – you may even spy a seal or two if you’re lucky. Rain? Hit up the Historical Railroad Museum.

Possible lunch spots: Waypoint Pizza, Cafe Acri or Sam’s Cafe. Afterwards, visit The Candy Store for a caramel apple, some homemade fudge, or a scoop of ice-cream.

How to dress: In comfy warm clothes–you’ll be outside a lot–and walking shoes.

Need to know: Parking is tight. The nearest lot off of Main St charges $4 per hour.

Bonus: Hit up the quaint shops of Ark Row, which were converted from boat houses at the turn of the century.
