San Francisco's Newest Playground

Trending Now

Yes, San Francisco families, the wait is finally over. After years of delays, planning, prodding, renovating and $3.5 million dollars – there’s a new playground on the block: the Helen Diller playground at Dolores Park, which officially opened to energetic city kiddos on Saturday, March 31. While we always love our tried and true playgrounds, there’s nothing like a sweet new playground to really make us love this city even more.

As many locals know, this project has been in the works for years, but the end result has exceeded expectations. Gonzalez Madynski, chair of Friends of Dolores Park Playground commented to the San Francisco Chronicle, “You see the design on paper and you have an idea of what it will be like. But seeing it now, in the actual space, it’s beyond our wildest dreams.”

For SF parents, this means there is a new favorite playground for the kids to climb, slide, build sand castles and explore. We think the best part is that parents can take in the amazing city views while supervising the little ones (though you may be on your feet more than your bottom while trying to keep up with the kids).

There is something for every age group at this new park, with a section for preschoolers, one for bigger kids and an all ages sand area. Along with the traditional swings and sandbox, expect to find a forty foot long “super” slide, major climbing adventures and even musical fun. Perhaps the biggest improvement was making the entire playground accessible for all children and installing a sophisticated irrigation system to prevent the flooding that previously created major problems for the playground. Among the highlights: the forty foot long “supper” slide (it really is that cool), a therapeutic swing for children with disabilities, a rubberized floor for cushy falls, a suspension bridge and super fun boats (one for the little kiddies and a bigger one for bigger maties).

Need more convincing that this new park deserves a visit? Check out some pictures from the San Francisco Chronicle. Below is one of many slides.

Next, the little boat. Don’t worry, there is a bigger boat for the older kids.

If you and the kiddies check out this park, let your fellow parents know how you liked it in the comments section below.
