STEM-sational Resources for Girls

The tech industry is booming in the San Francisco Bay Area but women are still woefully underrepresented in tech jobs. But the future is looking bright! There are tons of organizations that have taken up this cause and are working to bring STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs just to girls. By getting girls of all ages excited about coding, technology and science in general, the hope is that will lead to careers in these areas. Read on to find out what girls-only programs are available in your area.

Alexa Café from iD Tech

At Alexa Café they know that girls think differently and that is encouraged. Started in 2014, this all-girls program brings 10-15 year olds together at café tables to code, develop wearable electronics (how cool is that?), design games and build websites. Girls also learn the importance of entrepreneurship when they complete a tech project that focuses on a social cause that is meaningful to them. The café atmosphere cultivates a culture of open communication, sharing, independence and empowerment of women.

Locations: UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, Palo Alto High School, Notre Dame High School (San Jose)
