Wonderbug Outdoor Adventures for San Francisco Kids

47Raising  kids in San Francisco has its drawbacks. If your child’s idea of getting in touch with nature is ducking from pigeons in Union Square, it might be time to get them out into the woods. And you don’t even have to leave city limits to get up-close-and-personal with Mother Nature. As of this week, kids and parents have a brand-new way to explore the wealth of ecological systems in the Bay Area: Wonderbug Adventures. Started by Hillary Blum and Melissa Walton, local moms passionate about hands-on learning, the outdoors, and parental involvement, the group schedules outings (for up to eight little ones, each accompanied by a parent or guardian) to varying ecosystems. Sign them up for a Duck Discovery class at Lake Merced, or a Fall Fun Adventure in Glen Canyon Park, where they’ll learn about how birds, squirrels, and the other inhabitants of the canyon prepare for the winter through puppets, games, art projects, and exploration of the canyon itself. Building an interest in saving the environment (and renewing yours) while playing outdoors…it’s the way we always wanted our kids to play!
