Are you looking for up and coming spots perfect for kids in Seattle?New, family-friendly businesses are sprouting up alongside the growing number of hipsters-with-kids residing in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Grab your little explorers and head out for some fun!

How to dress: Layers, but you might want to leave the fleeces at home in favor of something a bit more cool. Skinny jeans and silk-screened tees are de rigueur around here.

What to see: Don’t miss a visit to the venerable Elliott Bay Book Company. They recently moved from Pioneer Square to the heart of the Hill and offer storytimes beside a huge kid’s castle Tuesdays and Saturdays at 11:30. Pick up a make-your-own-sock-monkey or simple cross-stitch kit at Stitches, where kids 13 and older can take basic two-day sewing classes with mom or dad. Take a spin through the impeccable children’s clothier Flora and Henri, then pick up a bag of chocolate covered edamame across the street at the new SugarPill Apothecary.

Where to have lunch: An easy A goes to Eltana Wood-Fired Bagel Café, where the whole family can grab a simple lunch of hand-rolled bagels topped with minty fava bean spread or fig apricot compote.

Bonus: Make a day out of a trip to the Olmsted Brothers-designed Volunteer Park, where kids can marvel over carnivorous plants at the Victorian-inspired Conservatory, grab treats at Volunteer Park Café, and run off extra energy on their way up the winding staircase inside the water tower viewpoint. At the top, you’ll find 360-degree views of the city. On clear days, peeks at Mount Rainier and the Olympics are sure to get a wide-eyed “wow” out of your little one.

Cost of trip: Inexpensive to moderate, depending on your purchases.
