Forget the Sunscreen: A Cool Indoor Sand Oasis for Seattle Kids

It’s raining out. Again. And it’s going to be until, well… July. You’ve been to your tried and true indoor play spaces and playtime at your local community center so many times that you’ve started bringing the girl at the front desk a latte. In other words, you need something new to do on days when the park is just not an option.

The next time you’re finding yourself and your kids going stir crazy from Seattle’s seemingly never-ending drizzle, pack up and head to SoDo to check out Lil’ Diggers Time at Sandbox Sports. Sandbox Sports is Seattle’s only indoor beach volleyball court – it’s literally like being at the beach, but with sand that is amazingly perfect and without having to worry about bad weather, slathering your little ones with sunscreen or making sure they keep their hat on.

Their Lil’ Diggers Time is for kids up to age five. Parents can kick off their shoes and dig their toes in the sand while their kiddos play with balls, slides, shovels, pails and trucks, all provided by Sandbox Sports (hooray for not having to haul sandy toys back and forth!).

Sandbox Sports also offers volleyball camps for kids that are worth checking out, including outdoor volleyball camps at Golden Gardens. For parents, Sandbox Sports has drop-in sessions if you want to spend some beach volleyball time for yourself or with a group of friends. They’ve even had leagues in the past that were mom-friendly, where kids can dig in the sand on one court, while mom plays a match on another – please inquire with Sandbox Sports for more details on what’s currently available.

Go: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm. Some Saturday sessions available as well, check their calendar to see when the next one is planned.

Cost: $6 per child or purchase a punch card for $50, which is good for 10 visits
