So when we heard about a recent G.O. for a Seattle park, our ears perked up. Turns out this is a special place indeed. Seattle Children’s PlayGarden is a unique outdoor park & gardening facility accessible to children of all abilities. The PlayGarden beckons kids to explore the gardens, swings, and playground and has accommodations for those with special needs to play alongside their typically developing siblings and friends. Here, the playground is wheelchair-accessible, the garden bins (used in their garden-focused programming) are located at a variety of heights, and scheduled programs are staffed with certified special educators. While the PlayGarden (a non-profit) has been operating at this site for awhile now, their recent Grand Opening celebrated the facility’s newest play equipment (a wheelchair-accessible climbing mound and a “river” water feature) as well as their brand-new buildings (including a kitchen, classroom space and ADA-accessible restrooms) which will allow for new, year-round programming. Oh, and the resident bunnies and chickens got themselves a new home there too!The PlayGarden currently offers day camps for ages 1–18 (there might even be a few spots left this summer) and they plan to offer preschool in the fall, after-school care, and year-round events.Check it out for yourself at one of their free, staffed Play Dates at the Garden this summer…the first two are this week. (Parent/Caregivers remain onsite). The PlayGarden also offers periodic Parents Night Out. Fun for all…indeed!Seattle Children’s PlayGarden Located at the South end of the Colman Playfield, Seattle (Upper Rainier Valley-see website for directions)-Angie J.
