The San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla will make you forget what you might assume about kids in art museums (knocked over art work, loud voices, and disruption). Shuttle on over to this hidden gem where you’ll find a fun, kid-friendly sculpture garden perfect for the kids to run around in, explore, and get their feet wet in culture and art.  With spectacular views of the oceanside, it’s also the perfect place to munch on some yummy brunch.

Sculpture Garden
You can start the kids out inside the museum, but if the kids are getting antsy, bring them outside to the sculpture garden located on the ocean side of the museum.  The kids will get a thrill out of the amazing nautical vessels sculpture suspended on the top of the front entrance of the museum.  In addition, there are about 15 sculptures for the kids to find and explore. Check out this sculpture garden guide made specifically for families with children under 5 years old.  It has kid-friendly activities and questions for the little ones to ponder as they check out each work of art.

Insider Tip:
Bring small drawing pads and pencils for them to draw what they see at the museum that day.  It’s a great way for the kids to appreciate and draw different works of art.   The museum does allow sketching but only with pencils. No crayons, colored pencils or markers are allowed.  Pencils are available at the front desk if you forget to bring some.

Museum Café
Start your visit with a scrumptious breakfast since we know the little ones tend to wake up early.  The Museum Café has a beautiful casual courtyard perfect for a kid-friendly brunch with blueberry pancakes and orange juice.  Breakfast and lunch are served daily from 8:00 am-3:00 pm with the freshest organic ingredients from locally grown sources.

Insider Tip: If you dine at the Museum Café, your meal receipt will get you $2 off your museum admission.
