For families with children who have Celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, eating out can be an adventure — and not a good one. However, San Diego families are fortunate because we have options for gluten free family friendly restaurants. It’s difficult to narrow the list down, which speaks volumes of our options in SoCal, where gluten free awareness is widespread and increasing by the day. However, we’ve rounded up five glorious gluten free restaurants in San Diego. Enjoy — sans wheat!

Healthy Creations
Healthy Creations hit the nail on the head with its tagline: the organic, gluten free mecca of San Diego. Offering “taken-n-make” meals, to-die-for baked goods, and fabulous sandwiches and salads that are all gluten free, Healthy Creations truly is a paradise for San Diego families or kids on gluten free diets. Plan to wait for a few minutes during the lunch hour rush because a place this good has loyal patrons. However, we can’t think of a single complaint. The employees are friendly and food is ah-mazing. Bonus tip: Try the Hostess style gluten free cupcake.

Flippin’ Pizza
Pizza is a favorite food for kids, so when a gluten free diet becomes necessary, kids can feel deprived of a childhood staple. And while larger chains like Domino’s are jumping on the gluten free bandwagon, you need to know that the pizza is truly gluten free. (Domino’s notes that those who are gluten intolerant should eat with caution because cross-contamination is a possibility.) Enter Flippin’ Pizza — and we promise, the gluten free options are flippin’ fantastic. If you’re going for delivery, remember that the wait can easily be up to an hour on any night of the week. if you’re too hungry to hang out, stop by any of the locations for a casual dine-in experience.

At first glance, Candelas isn’t necessarily a “family” restaurant, but for San Diego diners who are looking for something more than a chain restaurant, head out for an early dinner at a nicer restaurant that makes gluten free dining a breeze. Candelas offers a fairly extensive Paleo menu, which means you can safely eat sans the gluten. We recommend Candelas for families with a gluten free parent who wants to enjoy the ambiance as well as the fab food.

Usually, you bring the iPad with you to entertain the kids, but at Stacked, you use the iPad that the restaurant provides to order your food. And as luck would have it, the menu includes gluten free options, such as hamburger buns and pizza crust. And with fresh ingredients and made-from-scratch sauces, you can rest assured that if your server assures you the meal is gluten free, it really is.

Mignon Pho + Grill
