If names like Thomas, James and Percy are more like your kiddo’s BFFs than characters for a show, it’s time to turn off the television and check out some actual locomotives. San Diego is home to several model railroads that will leave kids entertained for hours. If your kiddo has a one-track love of trains, click through the slideshow to check out these San Diego hot spots for train enthusiasts.

J.A. Cooley Museum

When you step into the hidden gem that is the JA Cooley Museum, you step back in time. The unassuming storefront in the North Park neighborhood has an impressive collection of antiques ranging from automobiles to cameras. For the train enthusiast, the museum houses numerous artifacts and oodles of standard gauge trains dating back to the early 1900s, including HO, N, O, S, & G model trains and accessories. Be sure to leave enough time to introduce yourself to owners Jim and Carmen Cooley, the living treasures of this 72-year old museum. If you ask, they’ll even fire up the Wurlitzer or phonograph.

Keep in mind that the museum is full of eye-popping and enticing exhibits, however, because most are rare and expensive, make sure you're keeping a close eye on your kiddo and enforcing the “do not touch” rule. Cost: $5/person.
